Safari 3 on windows: get an eBay warning

Apple has released the Safari web browser 3 public beta for a while now. For a long time, I always want to try the Safari browser, cause the credibility it gets from its well applying to the W3C specification and the web standards. And finally, Safari 3 can run on windows now!
It’s in Public Beta, meaning anyone can download and test it but it’s not 100% stable. Apple claims that Safari is the fastest web browser on any platform. Safari loads pages up to 2 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2. On the comparison chart, Safari 3 is the fastest in terms of HTML Performance, Javascript Performance and Application Launch compared to Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7 and Opera 9.

Well, after download and tested it myself, and I liked the way Safari loads the website while it’s still downloading the site. It makes you feel that it’s already loaded and it’s fast. But, there are still some little issues I encountered which might cause me not to use safari on day to day base(becuase we have firefox, right? :) ) The one thing is that, it lacks international language support. So You can only surf with it when you are visiting English websites, if you use safari on windows visit this weblog, be sure not switch to Chinese, because you will see many blanks on the web pages. The second thing is that, it seems sending out wrong user agent version number to the web server. I say this because when I use Safari 3 public beta on windows open up the eBay home page, then click sign in, I get a warning: “To effectively use eBay, we recommend upgrading your Web browser. Benefits of upgrading include the use of the latest security updates and support of interactive Web features.” And after click the “How to upgrade” button in the message box, it shows me that I am using Safari 1.0. Then eBay recommend you to get Firefox (see even eBay doesn’t tell you to use IE :) ).

Of course, these issues are normal, it is still in public beta, remember? However, I think it won’t be easy for Safari to beat Firefox 2 because of the vast amount of add-ons/plugins currently available. Nowadays you can do almost anything on Firefox 2 browser. I did find plug-ins for Safari 3 but there’s only Adobe Flash Player, Java, Adobe Reader, Real Player, QuickTime and Windows Media Player. Mostly used for a richer browsing experience and not extra functionality.

Safari 3 for Windows only runs on Windows XP or Vista with at least 256MB of RAM and 500Mhz Pentium-class processor or better. Windows 98 user would have to miss this great release. One thing I noticed about Safari 3 is it doesn’t use as much Memory as Firefox 2 does, maybe it is mainly because I added many plugins to my Firefox.

Come here download the Safari 3 and try it yourself, you’ll love it.
