Google Reader ruined family Christmas Eve dinner.

Do you use Google Reader, a Google’s web feed web(not desktop client) aggregator? I do. I even set it as my Firefox’s home page. Well, I didn’t know that Google Reader broadcasts my shared feeds to everyone in my google talk contact list; not until I see this article today at WebProNews! The article said that Google “orchestrate” its own Facebook-Beacon-esue fiasco(recently, facebook.com has similar user privacy issues which share user’s purchasing information in the public). There is actually A Google Reader user posted complaint in Google Groups because due to this feature, it actually ruined his family Christmas Eve dinner:

“This is going to sound like hyperbole, but this new feature has actually RUINED CHRISTMAS for my family! I sent a share a few days ago that I thought would only go to a few politically-like-minded friends. I didn’t realize that because I had chatted with him in GChat, it would also go to my brother, who is of a different political persuasion. When he received it, he sent a snide, angry email about it to a large group of our family members….He called me a nasty name and told me that if I can’t take a little ribbing, maybe we shouldn’t talk anymore at all, including at Christmas Eve dinner. My whole family has taken sides over this divisive political issue, and several of them are not speaking.”

I posted this article news(by the way, I especially like above interesting user complain), not only want to express concerns that in today’s internet environment, user privacy are less and less can be safely kept in the dark box which no one except yourself can access; but really admire that kind of Freedom of Speech the Americans have(of course it is guaranteed under the first amend of the US constitution). Entire family took sides on political issues? Wow! If only when our Chinese people have these kind of family, then at that time, I will feel truly happy.

It reminds me that “Freedom of Speech is the mother of all other freedom”.
